![]() When I was a kid I remember hearing, "When you've got your health, you?ve got everything" and I would roll my eyes. That old saying struck me as malarkey. Not anymore. I now understand that good health isn't a given, but rather a goal. As caring adults, it's a pivotal focus for ourselves, our families and the communities we love. From its founding in 1926, Birch Rock has elevated the well-being of campers above all other ideals. To safeguard campers' health we need an up-to-date facility, and as you've seen in the latest Birch Bark, we're well on our way. The old infirmary had to go. It was built in the 1930s, and could no longer meet the needs of our greatly expanded boys' camp or today's health and safety standards. When we dedicate the new Brewster Health Lodge this spring, we'll wrap up a thirteen year process to rejuvenate the camp and to keep our superb program going strong. Once again our building project provides a bridge between innovation and tradition. Eighty-one years ago Chief and Onie Brewster fervently believed that boys needed a rustic camping experience for optimal physical and emotional growth. Their vision is perhaps even more compelling in 2008. As always, with the commitment of Birch Rockers past and present we'll get this done. We're happy to report that we have more than two-thirds of the funding lined up, but we still need to raise $100,000 to complete the health facility. Please help ensure the good health of Birch Rock and its campers. Pay tribute to the Brewster family and their lasting vision. Please join Dave Weeks (Trustee, Former BRC Director, camp parent, and Chair of A Call to Character: The Campaign for BRC) and me in supporting the construction of the Brewster Health Lodge. In the spirit of Help the Other Fellow, Francie Campbell |
