Camp Journal

It's a Happy New Year and Musher's Bowl Celebration @ the Rock with The 2010 CITS!  Our first-time retreat with Birch Rock's future leadership-in-training candidates:  Gabe Dreyer, Ben Semmes, Ben Duvall, Will Goduti, Will Alexander, Ryan Boothby, and  Theo Lipsky.  (Unfortunately, Connor McLaughlin had a champion wrestling match).  Under the inspiring tutelage of Mystro Davis, the group has mastered the art of sneaker snow-shoeing and sliding down the hillside from the field to the waterfront!

Mike and I and Mystro are enjoying the laughters, stories and camp tales of yesteryear, while sharing the energy and anticipation of the coming summer....

Last night, we enjoyed the warm fire and the comfortable digs of Brewster Lodge, while engulfing a great Sam's Meatball/Sausage Spaghetti Sauce- complimented by Jenny's homemade lasagna.  Yum......Then we passed the torch of truth and reminisced about summers past and those who are planning to return in 2010.  The boys ate Klondike bars and candy .......and we enjoyed the last few moments of Conan.

The morning we woke early with coffee and Biroca Muffins compliments of Mystro.  Some great breakfast cakes were engulfed from the Newton gang and off to the Musher's Bowl we go...........

Bridgton was hoping with activity, but dog sled rides were full up for all to enjoy.  So, the boys yulped: "Let's go back to BRC and slide some more down the hill and snowshoe the lake."  After a quick bite in historic downtown Bridgton .......we ran through Hannaford and let the guys create the meal and back to camp we go!

The sun is shining boldly and bright with 30 degrees of light.  The lake was frozen to the core, but the top snow cover was like sinking into a "slush puppy" puddle.   We toured the fields and the perimeters of the campus......while watching the guys build a gigantic snow slide in front of the lodge.  They were slip sliding away down McWain with Olympic fortitude and might.

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend and help at the Waterford Santa gathering.  A special thanks to the Smith's for hosting, the Alexander's for the snacks and the Davis' for organizing the ornament making element of the event.  There were 13 Birch Rock boys there who after helping for a bit decided to take advantage of the 60 degree fall day.  They decided to wander down to the local baseball field for a little football.  While it was a fairly relaxed game of football toss, the boys were able to run, grapple and splash down on the wet field (heavy rain yesterday made the field a spunge) and just burn a little energy and play.  We all had a great time and know the single mom's in Waterford who receive these baskets will be better for it.  Thanks to all for Helping the Other Ladies.

Enjoying the beauty of the fall foliage in Waterford and Lake McWain before the winter wonderland is upon us!  EARLY REGISTRATION FOR 2010 ENDS October 31st........We hope to hear from all of you!

Fall is upon us at the Rock.  The leaves are starting to turn and the place has a winter chill in the air.  The wild geese relax on the upper field with the local foxes spotted patroling along the stone wall.   Rich and I decided to take a trek up from Portland to haul a load of furniture and equipment, but also to check on the progress made by our wonderful grounds crew.

Charlie MacDonald has been working hard around the Boathouse and Climbing Wall areas.  We have been working with a few different environmental agencies and our local McWain Association to improve the water run-off down our hillside based on a watershed survey from the Lake McWain Association last season.  Charlie has hauled in truck loads of stone to improve any erosion issues and control and trap any silt running down the hill toward the lake during rain storms.  Excellent job, Charlie!

Today is the last full day of camp.  The boys packed in the morning and played Cross Camp Capture The Flag in the afternoon.  After a finger food dinner, we had our Chip Ceremony and Goodbye line, followed of course by cabin parties.

**We want to remind everyone that our pick-up times tomorrow are between 10am and Noon.  We also ask that no family pets be brought to camp.  Finally, if you decide to walk the campus after loading your son up, please take the car back up to the parking area to free up the space by the lodge for the next family.

Thank you for trusting us with your son(s), they were all a pleasure, and it was another fabulous season!
