Dear BRC Community:

I am writing to notify you that there was a fire in one of our staff buildings.

At approximately, 6 o'clock last night, while the staff was off-campus for a team-building event, there was a fire in Chief's Cabin, which was the housing for our Camp Director Mike Mattson. A faithful neighbor spotted the smoke and called the Waterford Fire Department. The firefighters from Waterford, with the assistance of firefighters from Harrison and Norway, did a great job making sure that the fire did not spread to the rest of our campus. However, we are saddened by the loss of two camp dogs and the cabin in the fire.

Fortunately, this building was not used by our campers, and its loss will not impact their camp experience. We are now hard at work to make Birch Rock ready for the arrival of our campers next Wednesday for the 83rd season of the Camp. Chief's Cabin, which was built 3 years ago, will be rebuilt at the end of the camp season.

However, the true essence of Birch Rock Camp is our staff, parents, alumni and campers who provide the foundation of our values and community. At this time in particular, we are very grateful for this community.

Faithfully,

Rich Deering '73
