Library and Tutoring

"If it wasn’t for the summer reading program at camp, I would never have finished high school, gone to college and become the educator that I am today."

A cottage filled with books, magazines, games, and sofas...this is the Allen Kearns Library at Birch Rock.  Books have always been important at camp, and this cozy cabin is a popular destination for boys to browse the shelves or play a game of chess.  Campers look forward to quiet time in the middle of their active days, and they ease into a routine of reading for pleasure here.

Tutoring is offered at Birch Rock to help campers make progress in areas of individual difficulty.  This can be a wonderful opportunity to boost reading levels, refine writing skills, or tackle math problems.  English as a second language is also offered to our campers.

One-on-one sessions and small group instruction are available at an additional fee by Pamela Stock, our librarian. Please contact Pam directly at 207-743-6781 (between 5 - 8 PM EST) to design a program for your camper.

"I am tearing through my books.  H.P. Lovecraft and  'Brave New World' are finished...thanks for the book you sent me.  I haven't yet sat down to read it because it looks a tad intimidating, but I'm sure it will be the first worthy successor to 'The Superior Person's Book of Words'.
